Your Credit Union Receives Financial Literacy Award
Brokaw Credit Union has been honored with the 2009 Governor’s Financial Literacy Award for developing a youth operated branch at D.C. Everest Senior High School and for providing financial education resources and instruction to
high school students.
At the high school’s credit union branch, student apprentices run the credit union’s day-to-day operations. The branch
helps students develop responsible financial habits while providing information about the value of saving and using credit responsibly. In addition, volunteers from Brokaw Credit Union provide classroom presentations and materials as tools for teachers and students.
“We try to teach young adults about financial responsibility and how to avoid some of the pitfalls they’ll face once they enter the real world,” noted Lyman Cline, president of Brokaw Credit Union. “From credit card offers to predatory lenders, they’ll need to be ready to make smart choices and avoid putting themselves in a bad financial situation right off the bat.”
The Governor’s Financial Literacy Award recognizes individuals and organizations for the excellence in promoting financial literacy to Wisconsin citizens. Brokaw Credit Union was honored to accept this prestigious award.
And The Winners Are…
Congratulations to our scholarship winners! Rebecca Pupp and Tyler Heil each received $300 towards a college education.
Our winners were chosen based on career plans and goals, GPA, financial need and a youth essay on the question: “If you were to plan a financial seminar for your peers, what specific agenda topics would you include, and why do you feel they would be worthwhile subject matter?”
Rebecca is a student at D.C. Everest and will attend the University of Louisville as a history major. Her respectful
attitude, focused interests, strong references and detailed essay on identify theft earned her this recognition.
Tyler is a graduate of Wausau East and will attend the University of Minnesota (Duluth) with a major in civil engineering. His trustworthiness, eye for detail and passion for his pursuits brought his name forward. His essay, which focused on student loans, was also highly regarded.
Both of our scholarship winners have been smart savers for several years now – in fact, they were charter members of BCU’s Moola Moola Children’s Savings Club in 1995!
Congratulations Rebecca and Tyler!
